It is a re-imagining, a bold one, in which he takes every element that worked from the original and ruins it, and then adds extra crap for good of all, this film is incredibly ugly. The visual language is incredibly uninteresting, but it keeps some of the jarring editing of the original, which without the connecting style is just awful. However Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is still a commendable effort, transferring over a lot of the same depth as the original. Ganja & Hess was a true art film and while Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is smoother and less experimental, it retains the arthouse approach. It does not streamline things or make things mainstream. It maintains the pretentious talk on blood, death, and desire. It keeps the fascination with African culture and uses black bodies artfully. It is a sexual and sensual film, with eroticism… Slow rolling and sultry, Spike Lee's "Da Sweet Blood of Jesus" is a vampire film about hunger, excess, redemption, and finding life in the shadows of death. Made of widescreen compositions, piano notes, and compelling ironies, Lee's film finds its lead, Stephen Tyrone Williams' Dr. Hess Green, infected by a literal blood lust and spreading that lust to a his mate. The tale is sound, though the production, as lovely as it can be, stretches the narrative out to its snapping point. Despite that languorous sense of self, the film can be stirring.
